Does Stained Siding Wood Peel

Sometimes moisture can and will seep in between the home and the siding which can be the cause of the peeling or blistering of the paint in first place.

Years ago the wood siding on the clubhouse was treated with what i believe to be an acrylic solid stain. You can clearly see the low quality paint sold as stain peeling. Cheaper solid stains will peel especially on horizontal surfaces that get walked on. Semitransparent penetrating stains allow most of the wood grain to show through and the color can be controlled by pigments added to the stain.

The stain is more water permeable. Defy extreme solid wood stain will give you the longest lifespan and it does come in a white base that you wouldn t have to tint. These stains penetrate the wood and do not form a continuous film or coating like paint. Most stains absorb into the wood surface so they don t form a film that could peel off.

Semi transparent dyes and stains don t peel like paint does however those which are thick or solid can peel in a similar manner to paint. I d love to update it with fresh paint and new hardware but i ve heard that you can t get good results painting over stain. Unlike paints semi transparent penetrating oil base stains cannot check and peel from plywood surfaces. I suspect the deck was either painted or that it received multiple coats of stain.

The bright white base is what you want to buy. My childhood dresser is beautiful but the wood stain looks faded. Paint has the tendency to crack and peel as it weathers. In fact oversaturating the wood will result in a thick film on the surface which will flake and peel away.

People often wrongly assume that applying one or two more coats will make the stain more durable. Stain fades much more slowly and applying a new coat of stain over an old one will make your home s siding appear good as new. In particular the bad prep can be from a dirty poorly prepared surface or because moisture migrating through the wood from behind the siding. This also prevents the cedar siding from rotting by trapped moisture.
